Language update

Well Damien has been diagnosed with a “Language Disorder”, rather than a “Language Delay”. A language delay will go away with time, however, a language disorder is there forever. On the plus side we know what we are dealing with and while language will always be difficult for Damien, he would still be able to graduate from college, some aspects will just be more difficult for him.

If you think about language as a brick wall, most people use various bricks to build the wall they need at the moment. Damien is having a hard time seeing the bricks in the wall, he just sees walls, so he tends to build prefabricated walls.

The way to help Damien is Speech Therapy, which will help give him a wider range of prefabricated walls to use, as well as special tools for Damien to begin building his own walls.

Originally our insurance was not going to cover the the Speech Therapy, because even though Damien was diagnosed with a Language Disorder, the insurance company classified it as a Language Delay, which they don’t cover.

Well Olya kept after the Insurance company, and no we have the go ahead for 40 sessions next year. Our doctor is suspicious though, so she has scheduled only three of them so far, and they take place every other week, just in case the insurance company changes their mind on covering it, at least we won’t be out too much money.

I am just happy that Damien is getting closer to getting more assistance that aid him in communicating with his peers and brothers.

Talking

Both Sergey and Damien are talking more.

One of the cutest is when Sergey is looking for Damien, he starts to call out “Damien, where are you”.

Damien also likes to use my parental “What’s going on here?” when he walks into a room.

Makes me want to start speaking with a pritish accent and saying “Right! What’s all this then?”, ala Monty Python.

Even Damien’s teachers say that he is hitting less and talking more, which is good, I would hate for him to stop hitting, but all good things must come to an end.

Damien is into reading books aloud to himself, though I think he is just remembering what we say based on ques he gets from the pictures. So I should probably stop making up much more interesting sub stories and inserting them just to amuse myself, or soon Damien will be repeating those.

Sergey really likes Goodnight Moon, so much so that he will often request it twice, once in the original size and again in the larger “Lap Addition” size (so named because once you open it there is no longer room on your lap for children).

as for singing, Damien can sing Humpty Dumpty, and most of Spiderman, Sergey is getting good at A B C’s.

Damien has started saying “No thankyou Papa”, which is probably my Mom’s doing, with the “no thankyou helping”.

Last night when puting them to bed, Sergey asked for “Ice water” as a delying tactic, while Damien told Sergey “Time to sleep Sergey”, “Get in the bed and go to sleep”, “It’s night night time, time to sleep Sergey”. As a father, “I approve this message”.

Sergey Speaks

Sergey is trying to talk more and more now.

He does a good job of “more milk”, this is prefered over his oridginal nonverbal method, which was to throw the sippy cup on the floor. Of course when Sergey was done drinking milk, he would also throw the milk on the floor, this did lead to some confusion, as well as a wet kitchen floor.

This morning when we were getting into the car, Damien ran around to the front of the house to get a stick. I was carrying Sergey at the time, and as soon as Damien ran out of sight, Sergey called for him with a passable “Damien”.
